For Love of Butterflies: A Review of "The Family Butterfly Book"

Who doesn't love butterflies? With their brightly-colored wings and the way they seem to float rather than fly, coasting from flower to flower, butterflies capture the heart and imagination of all ages.

"The Family Butterfly Book," by Rick Mikula is a great book for families. Rather than focusing on one aspect of butterflies like butterfly gardening or butterfly photography, Mikula's book runs the gamut. What "The Family Butterfly Book" is geared to, as its name says, is families.

This is one of the most beautiful books on butterflies that I've had the pleasure of stumbling upon. With its sleek, glossy pages, full-color photos, and treasure trove of information, ideas, and inspiration, this is a book that both kids and adults will love.

Rick Mikula is, without a doubt, an expert in his subject of choice. He's designed butterfly habitats for a number of gardens, zoos, and parks and has written several other books about butterflies. The joy he takes in these creatures is evident in every page of this lovingly-crafted book.

"The Family Butterfly Book" includes sections on butterfly anatomy, endangered butterflies, butterfly gardening, identifying butterflies, photographing butterflies, and other topics too numerous to name. More importantly, it's an interactive book, with projects and activities geared to get your child and yourself outside and into the world that we live in.

The book is broken down in an easy-to-read format that's perfect for kids. There are diagrams and photos, and special sections called "Did You Know?" which have interesting bits of trivia and facts.

"The Family Butterfly Book" includes a number of kid-friendly projects such as building a butterfly cage, building a waterless pond, and making a butterfly box. The projects are simple and fun for a range of ages, the kind of projects just perfect for an afternoon when the kids are bored.

What's nice about Mikula's book is that it's in equal parts entertaining and informative. Kids and adults will come away from this book with a better understanding of all aspects of these beautiful insects.

At $16.95, this book is worth every penny and then some. As a plus, Monarch Watch will receive a percentage of profits from the sale of "The Family Butterfly Book. This book is a great gift for any family, or for anyone, child or adult who loves butterflies. It's a great way of building an appreciation of nature in a new generation.
